Comments: An important early modernist painter and highly influential teacher. He opened his first studio in Philadelphia with Wm. J. Edmonson, 1888. He was one of the principal instructors at PAFA, 1894-1937. He taught summer classes at Pt. Pleasant, NJ, 1896; opened the Darby Summer Sch. of Painting with Anshutz, 1900, which they re-opened in Fort Washington, 1902; directed the Maryland IA, 1919-on; and directed the Breckenridge Sch. A., E. Gloucester, MA, 1920-37.
